Corn Exchange Young Performers

About the Corn Exchange Young Performers

Corn Exchange Young Performers (CXYP) meets every Tuesday night during school term time at the Biggar Corn Exchange. Workshops may also be offered during summer holidays. Sessions provide opportunities for young people aged 5-18 to learn about theatre and explore their own skills and potential in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

The Group Leaders are professional tutors who are highly experienced and qualified in working with children and young people of all abilities and levels of experience.

Members of CXYP will:

  • Develop skills in acting and performance
  • Grow in confidence and self-esteem
  • Make new friends
  • Learn about technical production
  • Perform at the Corn Exchange and other venues and events

Corn Exchange Young Performers (CXYP) provides opportunities for young people to learn about theatre and explore their own skills and potential. We provide weekly workshops for four different age groups, covering different aspects of theatre. The Corn Exchange is a community resource and CXYP plays a vital role in allowing young people to learn about the basics of performance and theatre.

Cultivating the interests of young people and their enthusiasm for drama is at the heart of our practice. We believe that dramatic expression allows children and young people of all ages to embark on journeys of personal, social and creative development. Participation in our sessions can enhance levels of confidence and self-esteem, whether performing onstage or with their peers.

The set up of our drama groups allow young people from different school years to come together and interact in a safe, creative and supportive environment. We actively involve our young people in many areas when staging a production. So if you’re interested in acting, scriptwriting, directing, lighting, sound, costume, make-up or stage management, then come along and join one of our drama groups!

Parents/carers are asked to complete a Consent Form which also requests contact details and information on allergies or medical issues.

(However, we do appreciate that there are times when a family has to look carefully at their budget. If necessary, we would encourage parents/carers to speak to us, in confidence, and we will try to help)

“I would advise any parent to put their kids into a drama club. It isn’t about teaching a kid how to become an actor. It’s about putting them somewhere where they gain this incredible charisma at a really young age. Then when you come up for job interviews, apprenticeships or whatever, you have this tiny little sparkle that you wouldn’t have had otherwise. I think it’s invaluable.”
Martin Kemp from Spandau Ballet and TV in the U.K

Come along and join the fun!

The value of our work is recognised and supported by our participants’ parents, some of whom undertake a significant commute to allow their children to participate. We are always appreciative of any parent volunteers who could help with administrative and pastoral activity and/or spare an hour or two once a term to serve drinks during our workshop intervals.

Feel free to pop in for a chat before or after your child’s class. We are always keen to hear and get feedback from parents regarding our classes.
